So I know this is news to no one. (I am, after all, writing a homeschooling blog.) But we’re homeschooling! Really, truly, officially homeschooling now, because Penny is kindergarten age this fall. So in honor of Penny’s official start of school, here’s the reasons why Penny is homeschooling. Because homeschooling gives us plenty of time […]
Penny suddenly announced, “I’m going to draw a picture of a hot dog.” “A hot dog? Like, a dog that’s hot?” “No. A hot dog. I’m going to paint it like the volcano picture.” “On a canvas?” “Yeah.” Fortunately, we had bought a multi-pack of canvases when Penny did the volcano art. So I found […]
I’m sure Oliver is not exactly talking yet, because, you know, he is tiny. But while he was nursing, the dogs started to bark, and he stopped to tell me, “Ufff. Uffff. Ufff.” “Those are the dogs,” I agreed. “Uffff.” He gave me a wide smile. “Uffff.”

Rhymoceros has turned out to be Oliver’s favorite books ever. I think he likes the bright, bold pictures, and the occasional touch-and-feel pages. Here’s an evening he was particularly focused on the book. He was talking to pages and carefully examining each one. And he kept leaning down to kiss the page with moon.
This is, from left to right, a roly poly, a spider, a ladybug, a worm, an ant, a tiny little red bug on a leaf under a magnifying glass, worm eggs hatching, and worm poop. The worm has tiny little hairs that she read about in We Dig Worms. She thought, at first, that they […]
Oliver spent a long time this evening crawling around the living room, exploring everything he could see. Eventually, he and Penny checked out the jack-in-the-box together. Once Penny was done, Oliver tried to figure it out on his own.
A big storm was forecast for the evening, so big that they canceled classes at John’s university. This seems crazy to me – we live in Kansas! Storms are a fact of life! But that’s okay. It gave of the unexpected pleasure of enjoying a stormy evening together. We watched the storm roll in on […]
